Laboratory & Diagnostic Tests Q&A

What laboratory and diagnostic test can I receive?

Benech Family Clinic offers convenient in-office lab and diagnostic testing. The essential tests you can get in-house include:

Urinalysis

A urinalysis reveals many possible problems, including urinary tract infections, diabetes, and kidney and liver disease.

Rapid COVID-19 test

This test detects proteins (antigens) from the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19. Your provider swabs your nose and/or the inside of your mouth and throat to obtain a tissue sample. In 15 minutes, you learn if you currently have COVID-19.

Flu test

Rapid flu tests are similar to the COVID test. They use the same type of tissue samples, take the same time, and reveal antigens from the viruses that commonly cause flu.

Strep test

Bacterial infections cause strep throat. Since many sore throats are caused by a viral infection, it’s important to run a rapid strep test to determine the cause. Your provider swabs the back of your throat and tonsils and runs the test. The results (available in about 15 minutes) show the type of infection.

Can I get a laboratory and diagnostic test for diabetes?

In addition to running a urinalysis to detect sugar in your urine, Benech Family Clinic also does a hemoglobin A1C test. The A1C shows your average blood sugar levels over the last three months.

Since blood sugar continuously changes, an A1C test provides more accurate results. Your provider uses A1C to diagnose prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes and to monitor diabetes treatment.

What specialized laboratory and diagnostic tests might I need?

Benech Family Clinic performs several tests to evaluate your heart and blood circulation:

Electrocardiogram (EKG)

An EKG shows the electrical activity in your heart, quickly revealing problems such as:

  • Abnormal heartbeat
  • Heart inflammation
  • Coronary artery blockages
  • Damaged or enlarged heart muscles
  • Malfunctioning valves

Your EKG can also show a previous or current heart attack.

Circulation tests

Two common circulation tests are the ankle-brachial index (ABI) test and ultrasound. Ultrasound produces images of your blood vessels, showing blockages that affect blood flow.

The ABI test compares the blood pressure in your ankle to your upper arm. The results show if you have a blocked artery due to peripheral arterial disease.

Specialized diagnostics

Benech Family Clinic performs neuropathy exams to assess nerve damage. It also offers spirometry, a test that diagnoses respiratory conditions like asthma.
